Mr. President?

I love working with kids. I was sitting next to one of my 3rd grade students helping her with her morning warm up. In walks a new classroom volunteer. He was a middle-aged black man, wearing a grey sweatshirt and a tag that read, “volunteer.”

The student in the desk in front of us turned around. “Are you our knew teacher?” He asked a little too hopefully. The volunteer smiled and shook his head no.

My student looked at him and squinted. “No, he’s not a teacher,” she said. “But, are you the president?” She turned to me with more excitement, “Is that our president?”
