Scary costumes that need to go – Part I

I have a theory that some people wake up in the morning and intentionally put on a costume, snickering at the private joke that they are keeping the rest of the world on the outs. That joke is called their “style.” They know it’s not one, and they get a private belly-laugh every time someone compliments how “unique” they look, or how much they are “admired for being bold.”

The first scary costume that needs to go is: GOTHIC. Let’s look from top to bottom: a) dark eye makeup, used to accentuate dark circles under eyes and leave the viewer open to the possibility of a black eye. b) jewelry that involves numerous spokes and spikes. Chains and skeletons are also preferred embellishments. c) red and black are worn, as if all other colors have been sent to time-out. d) extra skin showing, preferably the mid-drift and cleavage. That is regardless of your size or shape. e) accessories popular with 1890’s ladies of the night are also popularized in the “gothic style.”

If you were a teenager in the 90’s, you recall when this look took its first flip through fad fame. I suppose it was a look that could be overlooked on an angsty teenager. But please, everyone, can’t we all agree that this look is most definitely OUT? Too scary. Put that gothic kitty back in the closet.
